Annoying Habits in Social Media

You're Driving me NUTS!!

You're Driving me NUTS!!

I used to think that my little brother was the MOST annoying thing on earth.  Then I grew up and realized just how wrong I was.  So this post is just a wee bit ranty, but I have to note that some of these points were contributed.  That said, I’m not the only one bitching here :) .  Below is a collection of things that I, and others find annoying in social media:

  • Including PLZ RT in EVERY one of your tweets.  Honestly…this will only make me tune you out.
  • Also, if you’re using auto-dm’s STOP. This is rude, impersonal and on some of my accounts has completely killed the usability of my inbox. Thanks for nothing!  Steve Banfield reminded me of this one and I totally agree!
  • It is not about quantity over quality; so please, for the love of Stephen Fry, please do not follow/unfollow/follow/unfollow just hoping I will follow you back, so you can then unfollow me in an effort to boost your ‘followers’ count.  That’s just ridiculous.
  • Only tweeting or updating Facebook with quotes.  If I wanted that I’d pick up a book of quotes.  That’s not to say an occasional quote is not appropriate, but if that’s all your tweeting/updating with I just assume you have no original thoughts and rely on others content.
  • Overly long, drawn out fights/discussions.  At some point it just makes sense to take it off line.
  • The perpetuation of a discussion that should never have been.  A recent example of this is President Obama’s Mustard-astrophe! I know everyone likes to talk about relevant events, but it seems that often social media platforms turn into echo chambers where the same stupid story gets bounced around a bazillion times and just refuses to die.  Dude.  I’m a poor college kid and I like Dijon mustard on my sandwiches too. I mean really. Let’s move on.
  • Another Twitter related pet peeve: The bastardization of #followfriday.  This isn’t so much of a pet peeve as much as a tragedy.  I think #followfriday is a great thing.  Promoting your friends to your other friends on Twitter that you think they would find value in is an awesome idea.  But tweeting 6K lists full of nothing but random Twitter users with no context just dilutes the entire purpose of #followfriday – for me, anyway.
  • Submitting scraped content to sites like Digg, SU, etc. is not only unethical in my mind, but rude and just plain craptastic. Don’t do this! (Although if you’re doing this you probably don’t care about any of  that.) This problem is only made worse when the content is old and perhaps outdated, but it is presented as current and accurate. Thanks for Keri Morgret for this one!
  • Marshall Stevenson shared with me a couple of his as well.  The first being that everyone is an expert or a guru. Yep. See that one a lot.  Just because you have a Twitter account or have created a Fan page on Facebook does not make you a guru, nor an expert.
  • Which ties quite nicely into his other pet peeve, which is that there is more to social media than just Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter.  Broaden your horizons, take those blinders off, and go exploring.  You never know where you will find interesting new content and/or friends.
  • This one is a bit duplicative of some of those already mentioned, but it’s just got such great pizazz as a direct quote from Michelle Robbins: Biggest social media pet peeves – cowards, ass-kissers, fakers and false experts. They roam free and multiply rapidly – enabled by apps.
  • Inflammatory posts and comments.  There are ways to make your point with words that aren’t hurtful and disrespectful to others.  Enough said. *cough* Robert Scoble *cough*
  • All that aside, I still love my little brother.  If you do any of these things please know that this is not a personal attack.  Just a wee rant.  Social media is an opt-in environment and I always have the option of blocking/unfollowing/unfriending you if it gets to be too much.  If I haven’t done that I must be willing to over look your signal to noise ratio because, like my little brother, I love you. Well love might be a little strong in some cases, but you know what I mean. :) If you have other annoyances that didn’t get included please leave them in the comments!

Hey Kristy, great post. I guess I’m torn on the whole auto DM thing. I certainly agree that you shouldn’t use it for promoting yourself or trying to sell product or anything like that, but is it really such a bad thing to thank people for following you? And while no disrespect is meant, how many people are you following everyday to make auto DMs such a problem that your inbox becomes useless? Not saying you’re wrong, it just hasn’t become an issue for me. Of course I’m only following about 250 people, so maybe I’m not social enough. ;-p Really do love the warning against quotes, though. Those can get really annoying.

Great post. Created conversation even if insensitive. I am new to Twitter, but I love the #unfollow Saturday idea. How do I get rid of the spammers? I am not looking for ?K followers, just to communicate to/with MY community. Are there tell tail signs of people who follow “only” to market. I share and “market as a service”. ie “signal to noise” ratio is low and friendly. PLZ RT ;-) Love that comment***

Thought you might appreciate this funny blog post from @angpang about the Follow Friday nightmare – and not just a rant, includes an idea for improving the system: http://tinyurl.com/p844ql

I do not agree with your point on picking up the book of quotes if I want quotes. Not every one has time to read quotes from book OK. Also, I really appreciate the fellow twiples who share out the excellent quotes. Quotes are wisdom from people who live before us !!! Good Quotes are ways to improve ouselves – how are we gonna improve if having only our own selves to copy or reference for?

It really are spirit uplifting, when there are time i feel down and I come across a really good quotes!!

I would like to emphasize above are your opinions and please do not generalize

I completely agree with you on every one of your points, in particular #FollowFriday. In what is probably a douchebag move, I’ve sent the abusers a DM telling them that ten posts on #follows is annoying and if they keep it up I’ll have to drop them. I don’t measure my self-worth based on the number of followers I have, so I’m not afraid to dump the tweets I don’t give a shit about. Needless to say, I’ve dropped all those douchebags.

@Tdevilman676 your #unfollowsaturday is fucking brilliant!

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to thank people for following you. But social media is at its best when it’s genuine in my opinion. If you’d like to thank someone I think it would be best to make an individual dm that’s personalized and directed at that individual. Sure, it may take a little more time, but anything worth doing is worth doing right. But again, this is my opinion and we’re all allowed to do it our own way :)

Well said. Some folks just weren’t raised right, I guess.

True words. Maybe add “not attributing sources” as one of the most evil of all internet/social media (esp. twitter) flaws! It’s pretty painful to find you own work/tweets/… attributed to somebody else!

    rachael October 6, 2009 at 8:44 am

love the rant!! so what if you want to rant?! have at it! love all of your points. especially about the quotes, dm msgs, and taking fights offline. all good points! thanks for posting. I will RT ;)

I’d have to say RT compliments about yourself is the one I hate the most. It is straight up shameless self-promotion and make me want to vomit! YUCK

Updates for things like breathing and going to the bathroom is tops on my list. The overdrawn out fights scores pretty high on the annoyance scale.

““not attributing sources” as one of the most evil of all internet/social media (esp. twitter) flaws!”, quote from kdascheller (poster up higher) That is a great point, it’s those that “retweet” without the “re”. It’s flattering that what I said was found worthy of repeating however I expect to get credit where credit is due.
